Bringing the Calm

A woman in a black dress standing in a forest, looking thoughtfully into the distance.

In the early years of my business, when I was photographing weddings, and newborns, I was known for bringing the calm. “Phew, Ali’s here – she will calm us all down!”. In the middle of everything… the noise, the movement, the emotion… I could anchor a bride or a new mother back into herself.

Help her breathe. Help her take it in. Help her feel the moment, rather than be swept away by it.

At the time, I thought that was just part of the job.

Now I see it differently. Because something has been unfolding gently and gradually. It feel like a remembering.

A returning.

And now I can see it clearly…this part of me has always been at the centre of my work. The way I read a space before we begin. The way I feel when someone shifts, even slightly. The way I know when to step in, and when to hold back.

This isn’t something I’ve learned, but its shaping everything.

Who I work with. How I hold people. What I create.

I am drawn to those who feel deeply. Who know there’s more beneath the surface of their work, their life, their presence…even if they can’t always put it into words.

People who are ready to be seen in that place.

Not everyone will understand this and I don’t need them to.

Because the ones who feel it… will feel it.
